In Old Testament times, walls around a city were a symbol of strength and security. Without walls, a town would be left open to easy attack, not just from humans, but even from wild animals. When Prophet Nehemiah realized that the walls around the city of Jerusalem were in ruins, he wept and mourned certain days; fasted and prayed before the God of heaven (Neh. 1:4). As it is to a city, so it is to an individual; a person who has no self-control is like a city without walls. He or she is open to enemy attacks at any given moment.
