Topic: THE PRICE OF ANGER
Text: Read: Numbers 20:7-12
Daily Bible Study: Ex. 15-16; Matt. 17
“…Because ye believed me not, to sanctify me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore ye shall not bring this congregation into the land which I have given them” (Num. 20:12).
The chosen people of God were, once again, murmuring and complaining against Moses. Since their departure from Egypt, they had grumbled and whined. They complained of missing the rich food of Egypt and wanted the comfort they had known; all the while forgetting they had been slaves and under cruel bondage.
Finally, they were at the edge of the land God promised them. They brought their latest grief to Moses – no water! Moses once again cried out to the Lord who said, “Take the rod, and gather thou the assembly together, thou and Aaron thy brother and speak ye unto the rock before their very eyes; and it shall give forth its water…” (Num. 20:8). However, in anger, Moses lifted his hand and struck the rock twice. He let his anger control him and disobeyed the Lord in the process.
How many times have we acted rashly and foolishly out of anger? Even to the point of destroying something far greater than what even caused our anger. No doubt Moses was frustrated with the people and tired of their complaining. Yet he was expected to control his temper as God’s chosen servant. Unfortunately, his anger led him to disobey God and earned God’s wrath and punishment. Try to always keep cool and calm, especially when provoked and especially when you are not at fault. It’s not easy, but very possible. Reacting angrily always and suddenly can cost you very great loses.
Prayer: Merciful Lord, please grant unto us a calm spirit and a sound mind always. Help us to apply self-control in every situation and cooperate with the Holy Spirit. We pray in Jesus’ name – Amen.
